Windy Rockport

"Windy Rockport" 6 x 8 $150
From the North side of the art Center in Rockport we could SEE the wind, but were sheltered from it! So we painted there, Saturday....a fun group of serious painters all enjoying a great plein air session. I teach there once a month and we try something new each session....this time we worked on SPEED....painting fast because sometimes you just HAVE to hurry outside. By the end of the day, we had a bunch of little quickies that I hope will be turned into BIG works by the artists! Tomorrow I will show you my favorite one!

ACE Basin Reflections

"ACE Basin Reflections" 8 x 10
I made it back from South Carolina! Not before a wonderful little detour to the ACE Basin Wildlife refuge with a couple of dear friends and "Artist Heros"....Adele Earnshaw and Joe Garcia allowed me to tag along on their annual trip. We presented demos to a group of EXTREMELY talented young artists from South Carolina...and spent the rest of the week tooling around the Wildlife Management Area, painting, watching Whooping Cranes and alligators and seeking cell service in the swamp! Mostly I was just in awe of these two WONDERFUL artists....picking their brains about art theories and the origins of the Universe!
Please go look up these two amazing talents and marvel with me at their paintings....

Pop's Palms....with boats!

"Pop's Palms" 6 x 8
There is this little pool hall / diner near Rockport, TX. It is on the road to the BIG TREE on Goose Island....on the right just after you turn from 35 is Pop's Place. It is a GREAT restaurant, by the way...I like the shrimp salad! Anyway, below Pop's, toward the water there was this little scene just waiting for us to paint! That's Copano Bay in the distance

Poppy Place Study

"Poppy Place Study" 8 x 6_____Sold at SEWE
My "Poppy Place" is in southern Colorado, where my father-in-law, RV keeps a garden. Lately the poppies are getting choked out by BUNCHES of these native daisies....they are pretty, too, but there is NOTHING like the bright red poppies!

Low Country Layers

"Low Country Layers" 18 x 22 v....vaughan
The Best part about being a plein air painter is painting new locations. I did the "rehearsal" paintings for this along the Ashley River in Charleston, SC. last year. I just finished this bigger piece in time for the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition which starts this Thursday in Charleston. The very best wildlife artists in the world are there, with incredible paintings and sculptures. If you are in the area, please come meet me!

Winter Day Last Year on the Farm___3

"Winter Day Last Year on the Farm 9 pm hour"
This one is my favorite from the third group of 6 paintings( well, I also like the one after it from 10 pm....maybe I like that one better....OK, it's a tie )...part of 24 paintings in 24 hours I did last weekend. I painted many at night...but was not really planning to do any painting past 8 pm or so. When I painted the "Fall Day..." series, I got bored after it had been dark for a few hours, and painted most of those 24 during the day light. But , this full moon stayed nestled in the clouds most of the early part of the night time, and I had fun painting it. I stood with one leg in the studio and the other on the outside deck where I paint....it was cold, but 1/2 of me stayed warm, and it was the side with my "painting hand", so I was OK for the 20 - 30 minute duration of the painting. If you want to see the rest of the batch, please sign up with your e-mail address at right and click "join"....you will get my painting a day in your e-mail...just look at it and "toss" :)

Winter Day Last Year on the Farm

"Winter Day Last Year on the Farm, 10 am"
This is my favorite of the second six paintings on my "Winter Day Last Year on the Farm". By the end of this time frame the sun had gone dawn and I waited to paint the moon. I selected this day to do 24 paintings in 24 hours because of the full moon. Tomorrow I will post my favorite of the moon paintings! Please e-mail me if you want to see ALL 24 of the paintings. I will only post 4 on this blog, but my google group gets an e-mail with ALL the paintings (6 a day for 4 days)

Last Friday I began my 24 paintings in 24 hours for the Winter. This is one of the paintings I did in the 7 am hour, just after the sun rose over the frosty pasture. Sandy Man

"Sandy Man" 6 x 8
Sandy showed up one day....he was abandoned on the road and decided to adopt our family. We have had him for at least 14 years, so no telling how old he is now. He was always quiet and mellow, but definitely "alpha" as they say...he's just always there, alert to every wind and movement on the farm. This is his usual pose, now...he has really bad hips from jumping the fence for years. We pamper Sandy these days...I wonder what he thinks of this Last Year on the Farm? (I promise to start posting the Winter Day...24 paintings in 24 Hours ...TOMORROW!

Winter Day 24 Hours

"Winter Day Last Year on the Farm" 24 paintings in 24 hours____7pm hour

I have wrapped up my 24 hour marathon for "Winter Day Last Year on the Farm"...the session surprised me in MANY ways....FIRST, I had not planned a few days ahead of time, like I did in the Fall. On Friday I began painting in the afternoon...the SKY was brilliant! I just kept going! I think I might have actually painted more than 24 paintings....I have only photographed a few and may not organize the series until early next week, because I am frantically trying to frame up, label, pack and ship dozens of paintings for the SEWE show in Charleston. I must ship the first batch TOMORROW....so this is a little tease of things to come! 24 paintings in 24 hours "Winter Day Last Year on the Farm"

Gone By

"Gone By" 20 x 24 available
This is a big one I am taking to SEWE with me in a couple weeks....It was worked up from a plein air "Quick Draw" painting I did on location in Winter Park, CO last summer....this was Henry, the beloved dog of Doug Martin, a super artist...the real working title for the painting was "Henry's Rear End From The Front", because I NEVER saw this side of Henry....he was too busy scoping out the Geese (see them swimming by above?) and was not a very cooperative model....Posted by Picasa

Rockport Dusk

"Rockport Dusk" _________8x10_________available
Last Friday evening in Rockport, I went to my favorite place with my friend Mary and we painted til it got so dark we couldn't see. I painted the Pelican first (scroll down to see him) and then this one, virtually in the dark....I tell the artists that I teach that the first thing to do as an outdoor painter is toKNOW your pallette and to be consistant with where you put thyour colors....I have finally learned to stay put with my mixing and not "SPRAWL" color all over the pallette...that way I can paint faster, without having to look for things... This one will ship with my art to Charleston unless someone wants it! My 8 x 10's go for $450 but the First one to reply gets it for $300...let me know! I take all kinds of payments...

Toll Road Orange

01-31-2007 Last Year on the Farm

The cows left over the weekend and boy is this place quiet....The sounds of the roads have been there a while, but they are more pronounced now, it seems.
Our morning skies have been heavy and "close" so that reflects the toll road lights across the way...Today (Feb. 1) is the first day to pay the toll, so I am up early in order to go the "old way" to take son to school....A little more traffic, but my taxes have already paid for the road....I do NOT want to pay twice :)
24 in 24 will probably happen tomorrow or Saturday!
